Tasmanian infrastructure gearing up for Corporate Incentive Travel market demand

As Tasmania’s appeal as an ideal destination for the Corporate Incentive Travel (CIT) market is growing, so too is the infrastructure required to sufficiently service the market.

Business Events Tasmania (BET) understands the need for increased luxury accommodation options and international hotel brands within Tasmania, and BET’s Chief Executive Officer Marnie Craig is excited about the number of quality options on the horizon.

‘Hobart’s accommodation capacity is expanding rapidly with four new hotels soon to open.

‘The new hotels will be conveniently located in Hobart’s CBD and within short walking distance of many of Hobart’s conferencing and function venues, restaurants, entertainment and shopping precinct.’ said Craig

Hobart’s new hotel developments include:

  1. Hyatt Centric Hotel, 196-room 5-star hotel (due for completion, 1st quarter 2020)
  2. Crowne Plaza, a 278-room 4.5-star hotel by Inter Continental Hotels Group (due for completion 1st quarter 2020)
  3. Vibe Hotel, a 142-room 4.5-star hotel by International Hotelier (due for completion late 2019)
  4. The Tasman – a Marriot Luxury Collection hotel – 129-room boutique 5-star hotel (opening March 2020)

Other exciting developments in the pipeline include a major expansion to the hugely popular Mona. Late last year, Mona unveiled plans for their $400 million development ‘Mowtown’.  The 5-star hotel development is proposed to have 172 rooms and to include a theatre, library, spa centre, outdoor concert stage as well as conferencing facilities with theatre seating for 1075. If all goes to plan, ‘Mowtown’ will open in 2024.

Northern Tasmania shouldn’t be forgotten with two developments on the way:

The Hotel Verge, due for completion in early 2020, will provide an additional 86 rooms as well as meeting facilities in the centre of Launceston.

And a development application for the much-awaited Gorge Hotel was lodged in December 2018. The $50 million hotel inspired by its namesake, aims to be a ‘legacy’ for Launceston. A tessellated glass façade and rock patterned precast concrete will reflect the beauty of the magnificent Cataract Gorge Reserve that is only a 15-minute walk from the city centre.

The proposed 145-room, 5-star hotel will boast rooftop cocktail bar, penthouse suites, restaurant and conference/function centre.

Craig claims ‘Our strength as an organisation, and destination within the Business events industry, has always been within the association market. And while that remains of great importance to us, we feel that Tasmania has so much to offer the CIT market.’

‘BET is focussed on working with Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality providers to package suitable WOW experiences for this market. In turn positioning Tasmania as a highly desirable destination of choice for corporate incentive travel groups.’

With enviable natural experiences, easily accessible attractions, quality produce, genuine and friendly characters, what’s not to love about Australia’s island state!
